Gold price per ounce means one fine troy ounce
Gold is normally quoted per fine troy ounce, equal to 31.1034768 grams of pure gold. The market quote is a reference—not automatically the checkout price of a coin or bar. Currency conversion, product premium, payment method, delivery, tax and the dealer's buy/sell spread can all change the amount a customer pays or receives.

Calculate ounces, purity, product premium and a price scenario
Select a currency and enter either fine-gold products or the gross weight and purity of an alloy. The tool separates metal value from premium and extra costs, converts the same observation to grams and kilograms, and shows a transparent price-move scenario. It never invents unavailable bid, ask, high or low fields.

Metal value = gross troy ounces × gold purity × market price per fine troy ounce. One troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams.
TROY OUNCE VS. ORDINARY OUNCE
The 2.753953675-gram mistake changes every valuation
If an online listing says only “oz,” confirm the unit before comparing it with a gold-market quote. The NIST precious-metals conversion table specifies 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce and shows how to convert between per-ounce and per-gram prices.
THE PRICE STACK
One ounce can have five different legitimate prices
WORKED ONE-OUNCE EXAMPLE
A $2,500 gold quote can become a $2,690 checkout
One fine troy ounce at a stated USD observation time.
$2,500 × 6% adds $150, producing a $2,650 product price.
Delivery, payment and insurance lift the all-in outlay to $2,690.
Gold must rise 7.6% just to equal that outlay before selling costs.
If a future dealer pays below the metal reference, the actual break-even move is higher. Use the buy/sell spread calculator when a current or modeled exit bid is available.
FINE OUNCE VS. GROSS OUNCE
A product marked “1 oz gold” may weigh more than one ounce
Fine-gold weight measures the gold itself. Gross weight includes alloy metals. One gross troy ounce of 22K alloy contains mathematically 22/24, or 0.916667 fine ounce. But a 22K bullion coin can be manufactured with one full fine ounce of gold plus alloy for durability, making its gross weight greater than one troy ounce.
At mathematical 22K purity: 1 ÷ (22/24) = about 1.090909 gross troy ounces.
The U.S. Mint explains that American Gold Eagles use a durable 22-karat alloy while containing the stated amount of pure gold. The 24K American Buffalo instead has a one-ounce gross weight and .9999 fineness. Always use the official specification for the exact product.
CURRENCY TRANSLATION
The local ounce price has a gold leg and an FX leg
Keep both observations close in time. Dealer conversion and banking costs can differ from the reference FX rate.
Local gold can rise while USD gold is flat if the local currency weakens. It can also fall even when USD gold rises if the currency strengthens enough. For a two-period decomposition, use the currency and gold scenario guide.

HOW TO CHECK A QUOTE
Use this seven-step per-ounce comparison
01Confirm troy ounce, currency, provider and observation time.
02Determine whether quantity means gross weight or fine-gold weight.
03Use an official product specification for purity and contained gold.
04Calculate metal value before product premium and transaction costs.
05Add payment, delivery, insurance and applicable tax to obtain all-in cost.
06Request a same-time dealer bid for the exact product.
07Save the written quote and reject guaranteed returns or unexplained fees.

FAQ
Gold price per ounce questions
How many grams are in one troy ounce of gold?
Exactly 31.1034768 grams. The ordinary ounce is lighter and should not be used for precious-metal market conversion.
Is the quoted ounce price the same as a one-ounce coin price?
No. A physical coin or bar can include fabrication, distribution, dealer margin, payment, delivery, insurance and tax.
Why does the ounce price differ between websites?
Providers can use different data sources, timestamps, benchmarks, bid/ask conventions, FX rates and caching intervals. Compare labels before comparing numbers.
How often does this page update?
It requests a quote on load and every 60 seconds in live mode. The visible provider observation time is more important than the screen refresh alone.
Does one ounce of 22K alloy contain one ounce of gold?
Not if one ounce is the gross alloy weight; mathematical 22K contains 0.916667 fine ounce. Some one-ounce bullion coins weigh more than one gross ounce so they can still contain one full fine ounce.
