THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose the buyer and value basis before entering any weight
Plated and gold-filled items may have wearable, brand, design, sterling-silver or refiner-recovery value. They do not support the shortcut “gross weight × marked karat × spot price” because the gold claim concerns a layer, not the entire gross mass. Preserve the construction evidence, then compare offers that state what is being purchased.
FOUR VALUE ROUTES
The strongest market may not be the gold layer
RECOVERY MODEL
A defensible metal estimate needs layer mass, not surface color
Conceptually, fine gold equals the eligible gold-alloy layer mass multiplied by its gold fineness. For gold-filled material, a supported weight fraction may help estimate the layer portion. For electroplate, area, thickness, density, coverage and wear would all matter. Consumer listings rarely supply enough controlled inputs for a precise recovery estimate.
Even a technically recoverable amount is not the cash offer. Sampling, refining loss, treatment charges, minimum lots, stone removal, freight and payment terms intervene. Ask the refiner to provide the settlement method in writing.
OFFER COMPARISON
Normalize what each buyer is actually buying
- Same item or lot identity and same included components.
- Construction assumption and evidence used to support it.
- Eligible weight, units, fineness or layer basis and test method.
- Stone, substrate, brand and wearable-value treatment.
- Fees, deductions, price observation, settlement time and return rights.
The dealer offer comparison tool can normalize written offers after each buyer has supplied a defensible eligible quantity. It cannot convert gross plated jewelry weight into gold.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions that change the answer
Does plated jewelry have scrap gold value?
It may contain recoverable gold, but the layer mass can be too small or too costly to isolate economically in a consumer transaction. A refiner needs the actual lot, process and settlement terms.
Can I use a scrap-gold calculator for gold-filled jewelry?
Only if you have a defensible eligible gold-alloy mass and buyer method. Do not enter total gross weight as though the entire item were the marked karat.
Can plated jewelry be worth more than its metal?
Yes. Brand, design, age, condition, gemstones, sterling-silver substrate and buyer demand can create wearable or collectible value independent of recoverable gold.
What offer details should be in writing?
Record item identity, eligible weight, construction assumption, test method, deductions, fees, treatment of stones or substrate, settlement basis and return rights.
