THE SHORT ANSWER

Gold filled and gold plated describe a layer, but not the same layer evidence

In current U.S. FTC guidance, gold-filled, overlay and rolled-plate terms concern a mechanically applied gold-alloy layer and use fineness plus weight-ratio disclosures. Electroplate concerns a layer applied by an electrolytic process and uses a thickness framework. Neither term makes the substrate gold, and neither should be inferred from color.

What to request before paying a construction premium

  • Exact qualifying term and abbreviation, not “gold” standing alone.
  • Gold-layer karat or fineness and the seller or maker responsible for the claim.
  • For a weight-ratio claim, the stated fraction and what metal weight it references.
  • For a thickness claim, units, significant-surface coverage and measurement basis.
  • Substrate, nickel or other intervening layer, wear, refinishing and repair history.

XRF may help characterize a measured surface. It does not by itself recover a layer weight, map every surface or establish the unseen core. Read the XRF gold testing limits before using one spot measurement as a construction label.

USE AND VALUE

More gold layer does not create permanent wear or automatic resale

Friction at clasps, ring shanks and chain links can expose a substrate before broad flat surfaces. Sweat, chemicals, polishing and repairs change the outcome. For value, first ask whether a buyer is paying for a wearable item, a brand, a silver substrate or a recoverable precious-metal layer. These are separate markets.

Which usually contains more gold, plated or gold filled?

A properly described U.S. gold-filled item generally has a mechanically applied layer meeting the FTC guide's weight-ratio framework, while electroplate is defined by a much thinner surface application. The exact item still needs its own specification and evidence.

Does gold filled never wear through?

No. Wear depends on layer, location, friction, chemistry, construction, repair and use. A more substantial application is not permanent.

What does 1/20 14K GF mean?

In the U.S. marking context, it describes a mechanically applied 14-karat gold-alloy portion and a stated weight fraction. It does not mean the whole item's gross mass is 14-karat gold.

Can XRF tell whether an item is gold filled?

XRF can characterize the measured surface region. A surface result alone does not establish layer thickness, weight fraction or the unseen substrate across the whole item.
