STERLING SILVER / GOLD LAYER / THICKNESS / JURISDICTION

Gold Vermeil vs. Gold Plated Jewelry

Verify the sterling-silver substrate, gold-layer fineness, thickness, coverage and market-specific description before treating an item as vermeil.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Vermeil is a qualified gold-over-silver construction in the United States

Current 16 CFR 23.4 describes vermeil as sterling silver coated on all significant surfaces with gold or gold alloy of at least 10 karat and a minimum fine-gold-equivalent thickness of 2.5 microns. Generic gold plating may use a base-metal substrate and a different layer specification. The word therefore carries a substrate claim as well as a surface claim.

EVIDENCE STACK

Four facts are needed before “vermeil” is useful

  1. Sterling-silver base. A 925 mark can be relevant evidence, but the complete mark set and responsible party still matter.
  2. Gold-layer fineness. The U.S. definition requires at least 10-karat gold or gold alloy.
  3. Coverage and thickness. Significant surfaces and fine-gold-equivalent thickness are part of the claim.
  4. Intervening layers. The U.S. rule calls for disclosure when the sterling silver is covered by a base metal that is then plated with gold.

JURISDICTION CHECK

A U.S. product term is not a substitute for a UK hallmark

Under UK guidance, gold-plated silver is hallmarked as silver. The description may identify gold plating, but a standalone gold fineness mark can imply that the article itself is gold. A full UK hallmark also requires sponsor, metal-and-fineness and assay-office marks when the article is subject to hallmarking.

This does not make one system “better.” It means an online listing must identify the market, item, complete marks and construction claim. A 925 stamp alone does not establish gold thickness, while a gold-colored surface does not establish sterling silver.

BUYER DECISION

Choose vermeil for the silver substrate, not as cheap solid gold

Vermeil can suit a buyer who wants a gold-colored surface over sterling silver and accepts that plating wears. It is a poor fit when the objective is bulk gold exposure, predictable refiner value or maintenance-free color. Ask how the seller handles replating, nickel disclosure, returns and repair.

For a defensible item file, transcribe the marks using the gold jewelry marks guide and preserve the invoice description separately.

OFFICIAL SOURCES AND SCOPE

Construction words only work inside a defined jurisdiction

  • The FTC Jewelry Guides hub and 2018 revision record explain how marketers can avoid deceptive composition, coating, durability and value claims. These are U.S. marketing guides, not a universal product dictionary.
  • Current 16 CFR 23.4 describes the U.S. use of “vermeil”: a sterling-silver base, gold or gold alloy of at least 10 karat on all significant surfaces, and a minimum fine-gold-equivalent thickness of 2.5 microns, with a disclosure condition for an intervening base-metal layer.
  • The GOV.UK hallmark summary and practical guidance notes define the UK's complete hallmark, weight exemptions and special treatment of mixed, plated and filled articles.
  • The UK's gold-plated silver description guidance explains why the underlying silver may be hallmarked while a standalone gold fineness mark can misdescribe the article.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions that change the answer

Is vermeil solid gold?

No. Under the current U.S. definition, vermeil is gold or qualifying gold alloy applied over a sterling-silver base.

Is every gold-plated silver item automatically vermeil?

Not under the U.S. rule. Vermeil has requirements for the silver base, gold fineness, significant-surface coverage and fine-gold-equivalent thickness.

Does a 925 mark prove vermeil?

No. It supports a sterling-silver claim in the relevant marking context, but does not establish the gold layer's fineness, thickness, coverage or absence of an undisclosed intervening layer.

Why can UK and U.S. descriptions differ?

The two jurisdictions use different legal and hallmarking frameworks. UK guidance treats a gold-plated silver article as silver for hallmarking and controls how the gold plating may be described.
