Gold Price in India Today

Check a source-labelled INR gold reference for 24K, 22K and other BIS fineness grades, convert it to familiar Indian weights, and build a jewellery-cost worksheet without confusing metal value with a jeweller's final quote.

LIVE INDIA GOLD WORKSPACE

Start with the gold value, then add the Indian retail layers

The gold price in India begins with the international gold price and the USD/INR exchange rate. A useful comparison then converts that reference to grams, 10 grams or tola and applies the stated fineness. A jewellery invoice can be higher because making charges, other declared charges and GST are added. GoldObserve keeps each layer visible rather than calling one converted number the universal Indian rate.

QUICK ANSWER

What today's India gold rate does—and does not—mean

INTERNATIONAL INPUTXAU/USD gold reference

The underlying market observation. It is not a local shop's retail board.

CURRENCY INPUTUSD/INR conversion

Rupee movements can change the local reference even when dollar gold is nearly flat.

PURITY INPUTBIS fineness fraction

22K916 uses 0.916 of the fine-gold reference, not 22 divided by an assumed retail price.

TRANSACTION LAYERMaking, charges and GST

The final invoice depends on the specific article and disclosed dealer terms.

The live table is therefore best used as a consistent metal-value benchmark. Ask a jeweller for gross weight, net gold weight when stones or non-gold parts are present, purity, rate used, making charge, other charges, GST and final total. Comparing only the headline “per gram” number can hide a larger difference elsewhere on the invoice.

FORMULA

How GoldObserve calculates an INR gold reference

INR PER TROY OUNCEUSD gold per troy ounce × USD/INR

The metal and FX observations carry a provider and observation time.

INR PER GRAMINR per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768

Precious metals use the troy ounce, not the ordinary 28.3495-gram ounce.

PURITY VALUE24K reference × fineness

22K916 uses 0.916; 18K750 uses 0.750. The page follows stated BIS fineness values.

WEIGHT VALUEINR per gram × exact grams

The same formula supports 1 gram, 8 grams, 10 grams and 11.6638038-gram tola views.

Why GoldObserve does not publish one “India retail price”

A converted international reference is reproducible; a national retail price is not one uniform transaction. Bars, coins and jewellery have different fabrication and distribution costs. Payment method, product availability, location, inventory and dealer spread can change an executable quote. The provider label beside the live value identifies the source chain actually used; missing data is never replaced by a fabricated city rate.

INDIAN GOLD WEIGHTS

Compare grams, 10 grams and tola without mixing units

1 gramSMALL REFERENCE

The cleanest base for jewellery metal value and small bars. Multiply by exact net eligible gold weight.

8 gramsFAMILIAR SIZE

A common comparison size in parts of the Indian jewellery market. Confirm the article's actual gross and net gold weight.

10 gramsHEADLINE QUOTE

Frequently used in Indian market reporting. Divide by 10 only when converting a clearly defined 10-gram quote.

11.6638038 gONE TOLA

A traditional South Asian unit. State the gram convention in every calculation because informal usage can create ambiguity.

31.1034768 gTROY OUNCE

The international precious-metal weight behind many wholesale references. It is not an ordinary ounce.

1,000 gramsKILOGRAM

Used for larger bars and wholesale comparisons. Product fineness still determines contained fine gold.

24K, 22K AND BIS FINENESS

Read the hallmark as a minimum fineness specification

Karat divides an alloy into 24 theoretical parts; fineness states gold content in parts per thousand. Indian jewellery should be evaluated using the actual marked fineness rather than a rounded marketing description. The Bureau of Indian Standards lists hallmarking grades including 14K585, 18K750, 20K833, 22K916, 23K958 and 24KS995. BIS materials also distinguish fine-gold 24KF999 and standard-gold 24KS995.

MarkGold fraction usedInterpretation boundary
24KF9990.999Fine-gold reference; do not silently round to mathematically pure 1.000.
24KS9950.995Standard-gold fineness; different from 999 even though both may be described as 24K.
23K9580.958Permitted hallmarking grade; price the actual 958 fraction.
22K9160.916Common jewellery reference; metal value is not the final jewellery invoice.
20K8330.833Use the fineness mark rather than a rounded percentage.
18K7500.750Contains 75% gold by mass before considering stones or other components.
14K5850.585Use 585 for a BIS-marked article, not the repeating 14 ÷ 24 approximation.

JEWELLERY PRICE AND GST

Build the invoice from transaction value, not metal value alone

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs jewellery FAQ gives a direct example: GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery whether making charges are shown separately or not. The calculator follows that published treatment by adding the metal reference, percentage making charge and other declared charges, then applying 3%.

01Metal reference

Gross eligible gold weight × marked fineness × 24K INR reference.

02Making charge

User-entered percentage of metal value; a dealer may quote another method.

03Other declared charges

Only amounts explicitly entered; stones and non-gold value are not invented.

04GST

3% of the modelled total transaction value under the cited CBIC jewellery FAQ.

When the worksheet should not be used unchanged

It is designed for a straightforward jewellery purchase example. Exchange transactions, old-gold deductions, discounts, repairs, job work, business input credits, investment products and mixed stone-heavy articles can require different documentation or tax treatment. Use the jeweller's tax invoice and qualified tax advice for an actual transaction.

BIS HALLMARK AND HUID

Three marks to inspect before comparing prices

01BIS logo

Identifies the official hallmarking system. A verbal purity promise is not the same as a hallmark.

02Caratage and fineness

For example, 22K916. Use this exact fraction in a metal-value calculation.

03Six-character HUID

A unique alphanumeric identifier for the hallmarked article that can be checked in the BIS Care app.

04Detailed invoice

BIS advises obtaining an authentic bill with article details for dispute and complaint redressal.

BIS currently states a hallmarking charge of ₹45 per gold article and a ₹200 minimum per consignment for the assaying and hallmarking process, with applicable levies extra. That published centre charge is not the same thing as a universal ₹45 retail line item: BIS also states it excludes making and wastage charges and is assessed per article rather than by weight.

WHY INDIA'S GOLD PRICE MOVES

Four layers can move even when the jewellery is unchanged

GLOBAL GOLDThe USD gold reference changes.

Real rates, the dollar, risk demand, central-bank activity, investment flows and physical demand can affect the international market.

USD/INRThe rupee changes the local translation.

If INR weakens against USD, the converted Indian reference can rise even with a flat dollar gold price.

DOMESTIC COSTImport policy and supply friction can alter premiums.

Duty, logistics, financing, inventory and availability belong outside the pure FX conversion and can change over time.

PRODUCT & DEALERMaking charge and spread are transaction-specific.

Design complexity, brand, payment method, stock and buyback terms can create a large difference between two invoices.

The condition that reverses the cheapest-rate conclusion

A jeweller with a lower displayed per-gram rate can still produce the higher final invoice if its making charge, wastage convention, non-gold components or other charges are larger. Conversely, a transparent higher headline rate with a lower total charge can be cheaper. Compare the final payable amount for the same gross weight, net gold weight, fineness and design category.

USD/INR SCENARIO LAB

Enter USD gold and INR-per-USD observations from the same two dates. The calculator shows the USD gold return, the exchange-rate move and their compound interaction. Why there is no historical INR chart on this page yet

A reliable historical INR gold series requires a gold observation and USD/INR observation matched to every historical date. Applying today's exchange rate to old gold prices would create a false local path. GoldObserve will add 30-day, one-year and five-year INR performance only after a date-matched FX source and its reuse rights are documented.

BUYER CHECKLIST

Compare two Indian gold quotes line by line

01Record the quote date, time, city, jeweller and whether the rate is per gram or per 10 grams.

02Match purity exactly: 24KF999, 24KS995, 22K916 and 18K750 are not interchangeable.

03Separate gross article weight, stone weight and eligible net gold weight.

04Confirm whether making is a percentage, a per-gram amount or a fixed charge.

05Ask how wastage, stones and other declared components appear on the invoice.

06Inspect the BIS logo, caratage/fineness mark and six-character HUID.

07Calculate GST from the documented taxable transaction value, then reconcile the final total.

08Request buyback terms in writing; a purchase discount says nothing about the future selling spread.

METHODOLOGY & PRIMARY SOURCES

Current official references and data boundaries

The page uses the reviewed local NBU accounting reference when available in INR per gram. Live gold is unavailable until a licensed provider is configured; the source and observation time appear beside any displayed value. GoldObserve does not claim that this is an LBMA Gold Price, MCX settlement, local association rate or jeweller quote. Review the data methodology and source register for freshness and fallback rules.

INDIA GOLD PRICE FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price in India today?

GoldObserve converts a source-labelled international gold observation into Indian rupees and displays the provider and observation time. It is a metal reference, not a guaranteed jeweller buy or sell quote.

How is the 22K gold rate calculated from 24K?

For a BIS 22K916 reference, multiply the 24K per-gram price by 0.916. The result estimates contained gold value before making charges, GST, stones, brand premium and dealer spread.

How many grams are in one tola of gold?

GoldObserve uses 11.6638038 grams per tola. Because regional trade conventions can differ, a transaction document should always state the exact gram weight.

Is GST charged only on the gold value?

The CBIC jewellery sector FAQ states that GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether making charges are shown separately or not. The worksheet applies that published treatment to user-entered assumptions.

What do BIS and HUID marks mean?

The current BIS hallmark consists of the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. HUID is unique to a hallmarked article and can be checked in the BIS Care app.

Why can two Indian cities show different gold rates?

Dealer inventory, product mix, logistics, local demand, quote timing, making charges and spreads can differ. GoldObserve does not publish city-specific rates without a verified city-level feed.
