THE SHORT ANSWER
A Hong Kong gold quote needs a currency, weight convention, purity and side of market
Read “gold price Hong Kong” as four separate facts: HKD currency, the 37.429 gram Hong Kong tael, verified fineness and whether the number is a reference, dealer ask or dealer buyback bid. GoldObserve converts a source-labelled XAU/HKD price into an auditable metal value. It does not present that calculation as the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange 99 Tael Gold quote or as a retail shop price.

A calculated match does not verify a scale, hallmark, fineness or product. For a material transaction, confirm the unit convention printed on the quote and use a suitable calibrated scale.
WEIGHT AND PURITY BRIDGE
Tael is gross weight; fineness determines fine-gold content
Formula: quantity × 37.429 g × fineness ÷ 31.1034768 g × HKD price per fine troy ounce. Never infer fineness from color, a product nickname or tael weight alone; use the invoice, assay card or verified hallmark for the actual item.
THREE DIFFERENT PRICES
International reference, exchange market and retail counter are not interchangeable
Source-labelled XAU/HKD translated into the chosen fine-gold mass.
A Hong Kong contract identified by the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange.
The amount paid for a specific bar, ornament or piece of jewelry.
The dealer's same-time offer to repurchase that exact product.
The exchange calls 99 Tael Gold a market unique to Hong Kong and separately lists a Hong Kong Kilo Gold Contract. Those names describe market instruments, not every retail object sold in taels or kilograms. GoldObserve therefore links to the exchange but does not scrape or relabel its latest-quote page.
HKD TRANSLATION
The linked exchange rate narrows one variable but does not freeze local gold prices
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority operates the Linked Exchange Rate System with a Convertibility Zone of HK$7.75 to HK$7.85 per US dollar. That makes USD/HKD structurally different from a freely floating currency, but it does not guarantee a single gold quote.
USD gold can move, the market source can update at a different moment, and dealers can change spreads or product premiums. For a reproducible comparison, record the XAU source, observation time, USD/HKD input, tael convention, fineness and dealer quote time together.
BUYER WORKFLOW
Audit the round trip before choosing the lowest sticker price
Round-trip cost is dealer ask minus dealer buyback bid, plus charges not already included. Divide that cost by the ask to compare products on the same basis. A lower premium can lose if its buyback policy is materially worse.
DEALER REGISTRATION
HKD 120,000 is a due-diligence threshold, not a quality badge
Hong Kong Customs says the Dealers in Precious Metals and Stones registration regime took effect on April 1, 2023. A dealer carrying on precious-metals business involving transaction or transactions totalling HKD 120,000 or more must register. Category A covers qualifying non-cash transactions; Category B covers qualifying cash transactions as well as non-cash activity and brings anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing supervision.
Search the public register when the regime applies, but keep the limitation in view: Customs states that registration does not guarantee business performance or creditworthiness. Still verify the item, contract, custody, refund terms and pricing independently.
TAX BOUNDARY
No VAT or sales tax does not mean zero transaction cost
Hong Kong's Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau states that Hong Kong has no value-added tax or sales tax and no capital gains tax. That is useful context, but it should not be turned into a blanket promise. Dealer premium, fabrication, card surcharge, delivery, storage, insurance and bid/ask spread can still change the economics. Business profits and cross-border movement can also require separate professional analysis.

FAQ
Hong Kong gold price and tael questions
How many grams are in a Hong Kong tael of gold?
GoldObserve uses 37.429 grams for one Hong Kong troy tael. One mace is one tenth of that, or 3.7429 grams. The convention must be identified because tael weight varies by market.
How do I calculate gold price per tael in HKD?
Multiply the source-labelled HKD price per fine troy ounce by 37.429 divided by 31.1034768, then multiply by the item's documented fineness. The result is a metal reference, not a dealer's executable ask or buyback bid.
Is 99 Tael Gold the same as any gold item sold by the tael?
No. The Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange describes 99 Tael Gold as a Hong Kong market contract. A retail bar, ornament or jewelry quote can use tael weight without being that exchange contract.
Does GoldObserve show the live CGSE 99 Tael Gold quote?
No. GoldObserve shows a transparent international XAU/HKD conversion and links to the exchange for market context. It does not scrape, license or relabel the exchange's board quote.
Why can Hong Kong dealer gold prices differ from converted spot?
The dealer price may reflect product purity, workmanship, fabrication, inventory, settlement terms, payment method and bid/ask spread. Compare the same product and capture both dealer prices at the same time.
Does Hong Kong charge VAT or sales tax on gold?
The Hong Kong Government states that Hong Kong has no value-added tax or sales tax. That does not remove dealer premiums, fabrication charges, import or shipping costs, or every possible profits-tax consequence.
When must a Hong Kong precious-metals dealer be registered?
Hong Kong Customs states that dealers conducting precious-metals transactions totalling HKD 120,000 or more must register under the DPMS regime. Category and obligations depend in part on whether the qualifying transaction is cash or non-cash.
Does appearing in the Customs dealer register guarantee a seller?
No. Customs explicitly says registration does not guarantee a dealer's business performance or creditworthiness. Registration is one due-diligence check, not authentication, custody protection or a promise of fair pricing.
