POLICY LIMITS / SCHEDULED PROPERTY / VALUE BASIS

Gold Insurance & Appraisal Guide

Identify the property category, covered peril, sublimit and settlement value before relying on a homeowners, renters or scheduled-property policy.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Confirm the policy's category, limit, peril and valuation basis in writing

A standard homeowners or renters policy may provide only limited protection for valuable property. Physical gold can cross several categories—coins, bullion, jewelry, collectibles or business inventory—and the policy wording controls. Inventory the exact holdings, ask what is covered, and use an appraisal whose purpose matches the insurer's settlement method.

POLICY AUDIT

Seven written questions before relying on coverage

  1. How does the policy classify bullion, coins, jewelry and collectible sets?
  2. What per-item and aggregate sublimits apply to theft, loss, damage or mysterious disappearance?
  3. Which perils and locations are covered, and what is excluded?
  4. Does secure storage, travel, display or business use change coverage?
  5. Is scheduled property, an endorsement or a separate policy required?
  6. What appraisal, receipt, photograph and ownership records will be accepted?
  7. Does settlement use actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed value or another basis?

APPRAISAL PURPOSE

The number is meaningless without its valuation question

Common physical-gold value concepts
ValueWhat it measuresCommon mismatch
Melt valueContained fine gold at a dated referenceIgnores product or collector value
Fair market valueHypothetical willing buyer and seller under stated conditionsNot automatically policy settlement
Replacement valueCost to replace a comparable item in the specified marketCan exceed an immediate cash bid
Agreed or scheduled valueAmount accepted under policy termsRequires insurer agreement, not owner entry

APPRAISER SCOPE

Ask what was identified, tested and assumed

Record the appraiser's identity, qualifications relevant to bullion or numismatics, effective date, valuation purpose, market, item description, condition, photographs, tests, comparable evidence and limiting conditions. An appraisal that values a sealed product may not independently test the metal inside; one that verifies metal may not grade numismatic condition.

Independence matters when a seller's inflated appraisal also supports the sale price. NAIC consumer guidance notes that appraisals can be inflated and suggests considering an independent appraisal.

CLAIM FILE

Preserve evidence away from the same loss event

  • Current policy, endorsements, schedules and insurer correspondence.
  • Inventory with stable lot identifiers and non-sensitive location categories.
  • Invoices, payment records, custody receipts and prior appraisals.
  • Original photographs showing item, packaging, serial or marks and condition.
  • Police, carrier, vault or incident records if a loss occurs.
  • Protected off-site copies that remain available after fire, theft or device loss.

FAQ

Gold insurance and appraisal questions

Does homeowners insurance automatically cover gold bullion?

Do not assume it. Policies can limit or exclude categories of valuable property, impose theft sublimits or require scheduling. Ask the insurer about coins, bullion, jewelry, business inventory and the exact covered perils.

What value should a gold appraisal use?

The purpose must be stated. Melt value, fair market value, replacement value and a collector appraisal can differ. The insurer must confirm which valuation basis and documentation it accepts.

How often should a gold appraisal be updated?

There is no universal interval. Review the policy and insurer requirements, and reassess after material market movement, a major acquisition, condition change or policy renewal.

Will an appraisal prove authenticity?

Not automatically. Read the appraiser's scope, tests, assumptions and limitations. An insurance valuation may rely on identity or documentation without independently establishing metal composition.

Should insurance records be stored with the gold?

Keep accessible protected copies away from the same single point of loss. Do not expose security details or access credentials in ordinary claim inventories.
