THE SHORT ANSWER
Calculate the transaction before estimating a rate
Enter documented sale proceeds, selling costs, purchase price and acquisition costs. The worksheet calculates amount realized, adjusted basis and gain or loss. It leaves the federal rate blank because 28% is a maximum long-term collectibles category, not a universal flat tax.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
Build a shareable physical-gold gain record
Gross proceeds less entered selling costs.
Purchase price plus entered acquisition costs.
break-even; before return-wide netting.
28% is a maximum category, not an assumed flat rate.
Enter an applicable federal rate only if you understand how it applies to your complete return.
FORMULA
Two subtotals prevent the most common basis mistake
| Subtotal | Formula | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Amount realized | Gross proceeds - selling costs | Net sale-side value |
| Adjusted basis | Purchase price + eligible acquisition costs | Documented tax investment |
| Gain or loss | Amount realized - adjusted basis | Transaction result before return-wide netting |
Do not subtract all historical ownership costs without checking their treatment. Do not replace missing basis with melt value, face value or a dealer's current offer.
RATE INPUT
Short-term and long-term labels are not complete tax calculations
The tool labels a position held one year or less as short-term and a position held more than one year as long-term. For long-term physical gold collectibles, Publication 550 describes the 28% maximum-rate category and says a lower regular computation can apply. For short-term gain, the ordinary-rate computation generally matters.
The optional rate field illustrates only gain multiplied by the rate entered. It excludes other gains and losses, capital-loss limits, surtaxes, alternative minimum tax, state tax and deductions.
LOSS BOUNDARY
Investment loss and personal-use loss are not interchangeable
Publication 544 says a gain on personal-use capital property is a capital gain, while a loss on personal-use property generally is not deductible. An investment capital loss can enter the capital-gain and loss netting process. The checkbox does not decide the facts; it keeps the distinction visible.

FAQ
Gold capital gains worksheet questions
What costs can I add to gold cost basis?
Publication 551 says purchased-property basis is generally cost and may include certain acquisition costs such as sales tax and freight. Whether a specific storage, insurance, financing or professional cost is capitalized requires separate analysis.
Why is the tax-rate box blank?
GoldObserve does not know the taxpayer's income, other gains and losses, holding period consequences or state. The worksheet calculates gain first and applies a rate only when the user deliberately enters one.
Does the calculator prepare Form 8949 or Schedule D?
No. It creates an auditable transaction worksheet and CSV. It does not perform return-wide netting, fill a tax form or decide reporting positions.
Can I use the calculator for inherited or gifted gold?
Only after a qualified person determines the correct basis. Gift and inheritance basis can differ from the purchase-cost model, so entering the donor's or estate's correct established basis is essential.
