THE SHORT ANSWER
Verify the custody chain, not the vault photograph
A sound storage review identifies the legal provider, actual vault and subcustodian, account type, title language, bar or item records, insurance responsibility, audit scope, complete fees and withdrawal procedure. Reconcile statements to purchase records and test the exit before the holding becomes difficult to move.
CUSTODY EVIDENCE CHAIN
One brand can hide several legal and operational relationships
Read the diagram as three linked questions: which exact metal the records identify, which entity owes duties to you, and whether a documented route exists from instruction to withdrawal or sale. A vault photograph answers none of those questions by itself.
Ask each party to name the next party in the chain and state what record connects your account to the metal. If the contract permits undisclosed subcustody, the risk map is incomplete. The diagram is a decision framework, not proof that any provider or account is safe.
INSURANCE REVIEW
“Fully insured” is not a usable answer
Request who holds the policy, who can claim, covered perils, valuation method, aggregate and per-location limits, deductibles, exclusions and treatment of employee theft, mysterious disappearance and transit. Confirm whether your agreement promises insurance or merely says the operator maintains a policy.
AUDIT REVIEW
A report can be real and still not cover your account
Exact legal provider covered.
Exact vault or network covered.
Observation and report period.
All bars, sample or controls only.
Client records to physical holdings.
Unresolved differences and limitations.
ONGOING CONTROL
Reconcile statements and periodically test withdrawal
Compare quantity, identifiers, account type and fees with the purchase invoice and prior statement. Investigate substitutions or rounding. A modest, properly documented withdrawal can test response time, identity controls, fees, shipping and whether the promised metal can actually leave the system.

FAQ
Gold storage verification questions
How do I verify a gold vault?
Identify the contracting custodian, physical vault operator and location; review account type, bar records, subcustody, insurance, independent reconciliation, fees, withdrawal rights and the current contract.
Does LBMA approve gold vaults?
LBMA says it does not approve or accredit new vaults. Its Loco London information describes specific custodians and best-practice guidance, which should not be turned into a universal consumer-vault endorsement.
What should a gold storage audit prove?
Ask what population was tested, whether ownership records were reconciled to bar-level holdings, the date, exceptions, auditor independence and whether the report covers your legal entity and location.
Is a photo of gold in a vault enough?
No. A photograph does not link specific metal to your account, prove title, show encumbrances or establish insurance and withdrawal rights.
