THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose bullion or proof first, then compare the complete round trip
The U.S. Mint does not sell American Gold Buffalo bullion coins directly to individuals; retail buyers use dealers supplied through the Authorized Purchaser network and secondary market. Proofs use a separate direct Mint channel. Record the exact product, same-time all-in ask and same-product buyback bid before payment.
PURCHASE SEQUENCE
Seven controls from product selection to receipt
- Define the product. Bullion, proof, year, quantity, condition, packaging and certificate status.
- Verify the seller. Legal identity, physical contact path, complaints, policies and independent history.
- Normalize the ask. Include payment method, shipping, insurance, tax and any membership charge.
- Request the exit. Obtain a written bid for the same Buffalo, quantity and condition.
- Control payment. Independently verify changed bank instructions and avoid irreversible pressure tactics.
- Inspect receipt. Preserve packaging, photograph condition and compare measurements without damage.
- Close the file. Retain invoice, payment, delivery, inspection, custody and eventual tax-basis records.
QUOTE NORMALIZATION
Premium is not the checkout total
Use the same gold observation time and one fine ounce for each quote.
A lower advertised premium can lose after card surcharge, shipping or tax. A higher ask can still produce a better round trip if the dealer supplies a stronger written bid. Do not use the Mint's wholesale relationship as though it were the retail margin.
WHAT REVERSES THE DECISION
24-karat preference can be overridden by cost, exit or handling
Choose a Buffalo when .9999 purity and the Fraser design are the explicit objective. A Gold Eagle can be more practical when fractional sizes, 22-karat alloy or a stronger local bid matters. A proof can be rational when collector attributes are the purpose, but not when the planned exit is generic melt.
PRIMARY GOVERNMENT SOURCES
Specifications and channels come from the United States Mint
- The Authorized Purchaser explanation and bullion consumer-awareness guidance separate Mint wholesale distribution from retail dealer quotes and urge buyers to investigate sellers.
- The Mint's machine-readable American Buffalo bullion data and audited annual reports support program-volume analysis. GoldObserve does not treat Mint sales as total secondary-market demand.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
American Gold Buffalo questions
Where can I buy a Gold Buffalo bullion coin?
Retail buyers use dealers and secondary-market sellers supplied through the Mint's wholesale network; the Mint does not sell the bullion version directly to individuals.
What quote should I compare?
Compare the same year and product at the same time, including quantity, payment method, shipping, insurance, tax if applicable and a written same-product buyback bid.
Should I buy proof or bullion for gold exposure?
Bullion is normally the clearer product for metal exposure because proof pricing can include a collector premium. A proof can be appropriate when the collector product itself is the objective.
Can a Gold Buffalo be held in an IRA?
IRS Publication 590-A lists an exception for one-ounce U.S. gold coins, but that does not resolve account, custody or individual tax compliance. Confirm current requirements with a qualified custodian or tax professional.
