American Gold Buffalo Value and Buyer Guide

Start with one troy ounce of fine gold, then separate bullion value from dealer premium, buyback evidence, proof finish and collector-specific attributes.

THE SHORT ANSWER

One fine ounce sets the metal reference; the transaction sets the price

The standard American Gold Buffalo bullion coin contains one fine troy ounce of 99.99% gold. Its melt reference therefore equals the source-labelled gold price per troy ounce. The $50 denomination does not cap or guarantee market value, and no retail premium or buyback bid should be invented: compare real, same-time dealer terms for the exact bullion coin.

PROGRAM BOUNDARY

Bullion, proof and the 2008 fractionals are not interchangeable

Ordinary one-ounce bullion coins move through Authorized Purchasers and retail dealers. Proofs are collector versions sold directly by the Mint with specialized finish, packaging and a certificate. The Mint also offered fractional proof and uncirculated collector pieces in 2008; that historic release did not create today's standard fractional bullion program.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

American Gold Buffalo questions

How much gold is in an American Gold Buffalo?

The standard bullion coin contains one fine troy ounce of gold and is 99.99% gold. Its published gross weight is 31.103 grams.

What is an American Gold Buffalo worth?

Its bullion metal reference is one fine ounce multiplied by the current gold price. A real transaction can add a product premium, costs, dealer spread, condition or collectible value.

Does the $50 face value set the coin's market value?

No. Fifty dollars is the legal-tender denomination, not a gold-price guarantee or ordinary market valuation.

Does the U.S. Mint sell Gold Buffalo bullion coins directly?

No. The Mint distributes bullion through its Authorized Purchaser network. Proof collector products use a separate direct Mint channel.
