Treat acid and touchstone results as screening evidence
In a professional touchstone test, a controlled streak from the item is compared with known references and exposed to a suitable reagent. The Hallmarking Convention describes touch acid and touchstone methods as giving a good early indication of fineness during screening. That wording matters: the method is comparison-based, surface-dependent, potentially damaging and unsafe without chemical controls. It does not prove that the unseen object is homogeneous.

Four questions can stop the test before damage occurs
Proof, numismatic, antique and branded finishes may lose value from a small mark.
Clasp, solder, repair, plating and wear can make a convenient spot misleading.
Reagent identity and condition, reference needles, lighting and observer judgment need records.
Use trained procedures, current SDS, PPE, ventilation, compatible storage and lawful disposal.
REPORTING
Record an observation—not “real gold”
A useful record identifies the item and test area, whether the streak came from an exposed or coated surface, the comparison reference, reagent identity, date, operator, visual response, photographs and limitations. “Held at the 18-karat comparison under this procedure” is narrower and more reproducible than “passed.”
When money, legal status or settlement depends on the result, escalate contradictory or high-consequence cases. For a heterogeneous scrap lot, the sampling and melt plan can matter more than another surface streak. For a collector coin, preserving the original surface may be worth more than obtaining a destructive indication.

Gold acid test questions
Is the acid test for gold accurate?
It can give a useful early indication when performed by a trained person with suitable comparison needles and fresh reagents, but it is not a complete bulk-composition or authenticity test.
Does a gold acid test damage the item?
It can. Touchstone testing removes or transfers material to create a streak, and direct application or filing can visibly alter the object. Never use it casually on collectible or proof surfaces.
Can gold plating pass an acid test?
A surface-focused test can be misled when the tested material is coating rather than representative bulk metal. Exposing deeper material adds damage and still needs a controlled sampling rationale.
Is gold testing acid safe to use at home?
Acids can burn skin and eyes, damage surfaces and create hazardous waste. Follow the current safety data sheet, trained workplace procedures, ventilation, PPE, storage and disposal rules; do not improvise.
