ONE FINE OUNCE EACH / 22K VS 99.99% / LIVE OFFER COMPARISON

Gold Eagle vs Gold Maple Leaf

Compare two major sovereign one-ounce bullion coins without mistaking purity, gross weight or face value for contained gold. Normalize same-time dealer asks, checkout costs, bids and the conditions that change the better choice.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Buy the better documented transaction, not the louder national label

A one-ounce American Gold Eagle and a one-ounce Canadian Gold Maple Leaf each contain one fine troy ounce of gold. The Eagle uses a harder 22-karat alloy and has a larger gross weight. The Maple Leaf is 99.99% gold, has a smaller diameter and offers a documented dealer authentication system for eligible years. Choose based on product fit, then let matched all-in asks and buyback bids reverse that preference when the economic difference is meaningful.

The Eagle's additional mass is silver and copper alloy, not additional gold. The denomination currencies also do not make one coin a USD asset and the other a CAD asset: their bullion value is driven primarily by one fine ounce of gold and the market for the product. Use face value for product identification, not investment return.

PURITY AND HANDLING

24-karat preference and 22-karat durability solve different problems

The U.S. Mint describes the Eagle's alloy as producing a harder coin that resists scratching and marring. That can matter to a buyer who expects handling or prefers the historic 22-karat sovereign-coin format. The Maple Leaf gives buyers four-nines purity and a smaller 30-millimeter diameter. Its higher purity should not be converted into a claim of more gold.

CHOOSE THE EAGLEAlloy durability matters

The Mint explicitly links the 22K alloy with greater resistance to scratching and marring.

CHOOSE THE MAPLEFour-nines purity is required

The standard one-ounce product is 99.99% pure gold.

IGNORE PURITYThe entered round trip differs

Both contain one fine ounce, so material cost and bid differences deserve priority.

PAUSE THE PURCHASEThe listing is not ordinary bullion

Proof, graded, privy and premium-packaged products need a separate collector comparison.

PREMIUMS AND DISTRIBUTION

A wholesale program term cannot answer a retail comparison

The U.S. Mint's current Authorized Purchaser page lists a 3% premium over the LBMA PM Gold Price for one-ounce Gold Eagles and a 1,000-ounce minimum order. That is a Mint-to-distributor program term, not the price an individual should expect. The Royal Canadian Mint product page explains that bullion retail prices vary with precious-metal markets and dealer distribution but does not supply a directly comparable retail premium.

The defensible comparison is therefore operational: obtain each dealer's merchandise ask, payment surcharge, shipping, insurance and tax treatment; then request a buyback bid for the exact product. A lower ask can lose after checkout. A familiar coin can lose when a dealer does not repay its premium. A foreign coin can win when local inventory makes it cheaper and the bid remains strong.

What changes the answer?

Dealer inventory, geography, quantity tier, payment method, condition, package requirements, assay policy and gold volatility can all reverse yesterday's result. Save the time-stamped offer rather than memorizing a permanent winner.

AUTHENTICATION WORKFLOW

Documented security features reduce ambiguity; they do not remove counterparty risk

The 2026 Maple Leaf uses precisely machined radial lines, a micro-engraved maple leaf with the final two digits of the issue year and Bullion DNA. Registered Bullion DNA dealers can check eligible Gold Maple Leafs dated 2014 and later using specialized equipment and the Mint's secure database. The redesigned one-ounce Eagle includes a visible reeded-edge variation, alongside published weight, diameter and design details.

Neither feature set supports do-it-yourself certainty from a phone image. Start with the exact year and issue, measure weight and dimensions non-destructively, inspect documented features, assess the seller and use appropriate professional testing for material transactions. Authentication does not establish legal ownership, condition grade or a guaranteed resale price.

TAX, ACCOUNT AND STORAGE BOUNDARIES

Product specifications do not determine every owner-level rule

A tax result can depend on jurisdiction, product, transaction size, account, holding period and owner facts. Canada applies a precious-metal definition with form and fineness requirements. U.S. retirement-account and collectibles rules use different statutory language. Neither country's treatment should be projected onto every buyer or every special edition.

Compare storage before buying. The Eagle and Maple Leaf have different diameters and may require different capsules or tube systems. Packaging can affect dealer acceptance for some products, while ordinary bullion value should not be confused with the premium of a special presentation. Record holdings by fine ounces, product, year, cost basis and location rather than face value.

METHOD AND LIMITS

How the comparison remains reproducible

  • Uses official Mint specifications and source pages reviewed July 30, 2026.
  • Values both products from one fine troy ounce and one shared USD gold observation.
  • Leaves all commercial inputs blank instead of inventing dealer averages.
  • Separates Mint wholesale terms from retail offers and buyback bids.
  • Does not estimate authenticity, collectible value, tax, storage or future gold prices.
  • Names the conditions that can reverse the recommendation rather than declaring a permanent winner.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Gold Eagle vs Gold Maple Leaf questions

Does a Gold Eagle or Gold Maple Leaf contain more gold?

The standard one-ounce versions each contain one fine troy ounce of gold. The Eagle's 22-karat alloy raises gross weight to 33.931 grams, while the 99.99% Maple Leaf has a published minimum weight of 31.11 grams.

Which is purer, the Gold Eagle or Gold Maple Leaf?

The Gold Maple Leaf is 99.99% pure gold. The Gold Eagle is 91.67% gold with silver and copper alloy. Higher purity does not mean more fine gold when both products are the one-ounce version.

Which coin has better security features?

The 2026 Maple Leaf documents radial lines, a micro-engraved year mark and Bullion DNA dealer verification. The redesigned one-ounce Eagle documents a reeded-edge variation and official weight and dimensions. Security features help screening, but neither coin should be authenticated from a single visual feature.

Which coin has the lower premium?

There is no permanent answer. Premiums change by dealer, inventory, country, payment method, quantity and condition. The U.S. Mint publishes a wholesale Authorized Purchaser percentage for the Eagle, but it is not a retail quote and there is no directly comparable Maple Leaf retail rate on the official product page.

Which coin is easier to sell?

Both are established sovereign bullion products. Actual liquidity is the executable bid available in the seller's market for the exact year, condition and quantity. Recognition cannot be converted into a guaranteed resale percentage without a same-time bid.

Should a U.S. buyer always choose the Gold Eagle?

No. Domestic recognition can matter, but a lower all-in Maple Leaf cost or stronger entered bid can outweigh it. Tax, account eligibility, shipping and dealer policies can also change the result and should be checked for the buyer's jurisdiction.
