LIVE SOUTH AFRICA GOLD WORKSPACE
A rand gold quote is the starting point, not the price of a Krugerrand
Gold in South Africa can be expressed in rand per fine troy ounce or gram, but a physical product decision needs more. A useful Krugerrand comparison separates its stated fine-gold content from its heavier 22-carat gross mass, then adds the dealer premium, complete checkout cost, executable buyback and any collectible value. The live worksheet below keeps those layers separate and source-labelled.

QUICK ANSWER
Use four numbers for four different South African gold decisions
A source, observation time and unit are part of the price.
Use stated fine-gold content, not gross mass alone.
Add premium, payment, delivery, insurance and applicable tax.
A same-time buyer quote reveals the immediate round-trip gap.
A proof-set retail price, an ordinary dealer listing and a SARB gold-content purchase are different markets. Compare like with like: exact coin, finish, year, quantity, condition, quote time and payment method. A scarce proof may carry collectible value, while SARB explicitly does not pay that premium.
THE ZAR PRICE ENGINE
Rand gold combines the global gold price with USD/ZAR
Use compatible observations taken at the same time and on the same bid, ask or midpoint basis.
Enter comparable gold and exchange-rate values
Use the same dates and one consistent exchange-rate convention.
Local return = (1 + USD gold return) × (1 + local-currency-per-USD return) - 1.
Market translation only. Physical premiums, dealer spreads, tax, delivery, storage and observation-time differences are not inferred.
These are round teaching inputs, not recorded market history. A weaker rand can lift the local gold price even if USD gold is flat; a stronger rand can offset a USD gain. The calculator isolates the two effects without claiming a future currency or gold path.
KRUGERRAND SPECIFICATION
One fine ounce is not the same as one ounce of gross coin mass
Rand Refinery describes the Krugerrand as 22-carat gold: 916.7 parts gold and 83.3 parts copper. Copper improves resistance to scratching and raises gross mass. The size printed on the bullion coin refers to pure-gold content, so applying 91.67% to that fine ounce again would understate melt value.
Read the stated fine-gold ounce, year and finish.
Mass and diameter are authentication inputs, not a complete test.
Fine ounces multiplied by the same-time ZAR gold reference.
Premium, costs, tax treatment and actual buyer bid remain separate.
VAT BOUNDARY
Krugerrand zero-rating is not a universal rule for anything made of gold
SARS VAT guidance identifies supplies of Krugerrands contemplated by section 11(1)(k) as zero-rated. Its current VAT 404 vendor guide also says a zero-rated Krugerrand supply falls outside the domestic reverse charge for valuable metal. That is a product-and-supply rule, not a blanket exemption for jewellery, foreign coins, medals, second-hand manufactured gold or every bar.
Keep the exact legal-tender coin and tax-invoice characterization.
Karat, workmanship, second-hand status and intended processing can change treatment.
A foreign bullion or collector coin may sit under a different rule.
Vendor status, form, source and exclusions require professional review.
The interactive calculator does not add a guessed VAT amount. Use the exact invoice and current SARS guidance. Tax treatment can depend on facts beyond weight and purity, and this page is not tax advice.
SARB BUYBACK
The Reserve Bank gold-content floor is not a collectible appraisal
SARB states that it purchases eligible legal-tender gold coins from the public by appointment and pays in rand using the prevailing gold price and dollar exchange rate. It accepts Krugerrands and specified South African legal-tender gold series, but does not pay extra for scarcity, proof finish or condition. Current location, appointment days, identification and payment requirements should be confirmed on the official page before travel.
This creates a useful decision rule: compare a dealer's net bid with the official gold-content route, but do not assume either is always higher. A real dealer may pay for product demand, while costs, testing and inventory can reduce the offer. A proof coin needs a separate collector comparison before being sold only for metal.
BUYING AND SELLING CHECKLIST
Audit the whole Krugerrand round trip
01Record the ZAR gold reference, provider, observed time and unit.
02Identify bullion or proof, year, fine-gold size, gross mass and condition.
03Calculate metal value from fine ounces, not the copper-inclusive gross mass.
04Separate product premium from card, transfer, delivery and insurance costs.
05Retain the seller's VAT characterization and supporting invoice.
06Request a same-time net buyback for the exact coin and quantity.
07Compare SARB gold-content eligibility with dealer and collector alternatives.
08Confirm storage, insurance, ownership records and eventual access.
09For export, check current SARB exchange-control and SARS customs requirements.
10Reject guaranteed appreciation, hidden spreads and pressure to bypass records.
METHODOLOGY & PRIMARY SOURCES
Official specifications, tax guidance and buyback boundaries
- Rand Refinery product guidance documents the 22-carat alloy, available fine-gold sizes and legal-tender value basis.
- South African Mint 2026 range provides current Krugerrand mass and diameter specifications.
- SARB gold coins purchased from the public explains eligible coins, gold-content valuation, appointments and the absence of collectible premiums.
- SARS VAT 404 guide for vendors documents the current VAT rate, valuable-metal reverse charge and Krugerrand zero-rating boundary.
- SARS VAT Connect Issue 14 explains why zero-rated Krugerrand supplies sit outside the domestic reverse charge.
Live ZAR pricing comes from the same market endpoint used across GoldObserve and retains provider and observation time. The page does not reproduce a dealer catalogue, predict USD/ZAR, appraise collectible coins or decide a taxpayer's treatment. Read the data methodology and source register.

SOUTH AFRICA GOLD FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price in South Africa today?
GoldObserve shows a source-labelled gold reference in South African rand per fine troy ounce. The Krugerrand worksheet converts the same live observation into fine-gold values and keeps product premium, payout and break-even assumptions separate.
How much gold is in a one-ounce Krugerrand?
A one-ounce gold Krugerrand contains one full troy ounce of fine gold. Its gross mass is about 33.930 grams because the 22-carat alloy also contains copper. Do not multiply the advertised fine ounce by 91.67% again.
Why is a Krugerrand heavier than one troy ounce?
The coin is 22-carat gold, or 916.67 fineness, with copper added for durability. The alloy raises gross mass while the fine-gold content remains the stated one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce or tenth ounce.
Does a Krugerrand have a face value in rand?
It does not carry a fixed rand denomination. Rand Refinery describes its legal-tender value as linked to its pure-gold ounce content, and the South African Reserve Bank buys eligible legal-tender gold coins using the prevailing gold price and exchange rate.
Does the South African Reserve Bank pay a collectible premium?
No. SARB states that it pays for eligible coins' gold content and does not pay extra for scarcity or collectability. A coin dealer or collector may value a rare or proof issue differently, but that requires separate evidence.
Is VAT charged on a Krugerrand in South Africa?
SARS guidance identifies supplies of Krugerrands under section 11(1)(k) as zero-rated. That conclusion should not be copied to jewellery, foreign coins, medals, bars or collectible products without checking the exact supply and current tax rules.
Why can the rand gold price rise when USD gold is flat?
A simplified ZAR gold price is USD gold multiplied by rand per US dollar. If the rand weakens while USD gold is unchanged, the converted rand price can rise. Product premium and dealer spread can move independently as well.
