Gold Reserve Context by Country

Compare a selected set of countries using two annual reserve indicators: total reserves including gold and total reserves excluding gold. The difference is a transparent context calculation, not a reported gold-tonnage series or a central-bank transaction ledger.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Reserve value and gold holdings are different questions

World Bank WDI publishes annual reserve values in current U.S. dollars. GoldObserve keeps the two official indicators separate, then calculates their same-country, same-year difference so the reader can see the implied gold component in value terms. It is a context layer for research, not proof of how many tonnes a country owns or whether it bought gold that year.

UNITCurrent USD

Nominal reserve value, not tonnes.

FREQUENCYAnnual

METHODDifference

BOUNDARYSelected 10

This series answers how the selected official reserve measure changed in current USD. It does not show physical gold tonnage, a monthly path, a central-bank purchase, or a forecast.

RESERVE OPERATING MODEL

A stock can change through more than purchases and sales

Separate custody quantity, valuation basis, reporting perimeter and publication version before interpreting a reserve series. A higher reported value can reflect price, exchange rates, scope or revision as well as a quantity change.

Two-branch U.S. gold reserve valuation diagram applying either the statutory 42.2222 dollar book rate or a same-time market gold reference to the same official fine-troy-ounce quantity.
The official quantity stays fixed while the valuation basis changes. The statutory branch produces the reported accounting value; the same-time market branch produces a dated GoldObserve scenario. Their difference is not cash, realizable proceeds or evidence of a revaluation policy.Swipe the diagram horizontally to read every label.Open full-size SVG

Interpretation boundary: The diagram is a research sequence, not evidence that a central bank bought or sold gold in a particular period.

IMF IRFCL VERSION EVIDENCE

Two official dataset versions are comparable, but they do not prove buying or selling

GoldObserve retained a normalized comparison of IMF IRFCL versions 11.0.0 and 12.0.0. It proves that the official publication changed; it does not by itself establish complete country coverage or central-bank purchases and sales.

Evidence laneVersion changePermitted conclusion
Gold volume1 added · 0 revised · 0 deletedVersion 12 adds one 2025-M12 Thailand observation; no volume revision was observed in this bounded comparison.
Gold value1 added · 1 revised · 0 deletedOne Thailand addition and one Angola value revision are version evidence, not transaction-flow evidence.
Publication11.0.0: Jun 17, 2026 · 12.0.0: Aug 26, 2026The two source versions can be compared and reproduced.

These two releases are useful for tracking publication changes. A complete global increase/decrease table still needs broader comparable coverage and a clearly documented reuse basis.

SOURCE AND LIMITS

What this dataset can and cannot answer

This explorer showsIt does not showWhy the distinction matters
Annual total reserves including goldPhysical gold tonnesA current-USD accounting context does not carry a mass unit.
Annual total reserves excluding goldA monthly central-bank purchase seriesA difference can reflect valuation, timing, revisions and reporting.
A same-year arithmetic differenceCausality or price predictionThe result is derived evidence, not a forecast or investment signal.

Source fields are kept locally as normalized records. The raw World Bank responses are not retained in the project. Future updates must record the new source-response hashes, added, revised and deleted observations, and preserve nulls before a reviewed version can replace this baseline.
