THE SHORT ANSWER
One fine ounce anchors value; year and transaction determine the rest
The standard 2026 one-ounce Gold Britannia contains one fine troy ounce of 999.9 gold. Its metal value therefore equals a same-time gold price per fine ounce. The amount a buyer pays or a seller receives depends on the exact year and finish, dealer premium, complete checkout cost, condition, verification and buyback bid. The £100 denomination is not the bullion value.

LIVE VALUE WORKSHEET
Calculate Britannia melt value without inventing a dealer quote
The worksheet opens with the official one-ounce Britannia preset and requests a source-labelled GBP gold observation. Premium and payout percentages are transparent scenarios, not claims about a retailer. Enter an actual transaction price when you have one and preserve the provider and observation time with the result.

Preset specifications are product references from the named official mints. Verify the exact year, variant and authenticity of the coin before a transaction. One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams.
OFFICIAL 2026 SPECIFICATION
Fine gold, gross weight and face value answer different questions
| Field | Published value | Correct use |
|---|---|---|
| Fine gold | 1 troy oz | Metal-value calculation |
| Fineness | 999.9 | Current product identity |
| Gross weight | 31.21 g | Physical screening for this issue |
| Diameter | 32.69 mm | One non-destructive screening input |
| Denomination | £100 | Legal-tender identity, not melt value |
| Designers | Philip Nathan / Martin Jennings | Reverse and obverse identification |
A troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams. The 31.21-gram gross specification and the one-troy-ounce pure-metal statement are not interchangeable fields. Use the stated fine ounce for melt value. Use published gross weight and diameter to screen the exact issue. Do not multiply one fine ounce by 99.99% again.
YEAR IDENTIFICATION
The 2013 purity change makes the date operationally important
The Royal Mint introduced the Gold Britannia in 1987 in 22-carat gold and increased the standard bullion coin to 24-carat, 999.9-fine gold in 2013. A standard pre-2013 one-ounce Britannia still states one fine troy ounce of gold, but alloy raises its gross mass. Applying the 2026 weight to a 1990s coin can create a false discrepancy.
Use a pre-2013 specification and year-appropriate design evidence.
Current one-ounce bullion uses the four-nines specification.
Do not demand them on a legitimate older issue.
Finish, packaging, mintage and condition can change value.
Use the dedicated 22K versus 24K Britannia guide before weighing an older coin.
SECURITY AND AUTHENTICATION
Four visible features form a sequence, not a pass badge
The current design documents a latent image that switches between a trident and padlock, a wave-like surface animation, the micro-text DECUS ET TUTAMEN and tincture lines defining the Union flag on Britannia's shield. Examine the response while changing angle and light; a still marketplace photograph cannot demonstrate the full optical behaviour.
A counterfeiter can imitate visible elements. Begin with provenance and exact product identification, then compare weight and diameter with calibrated equipment, inspect documented design features and escalate material transactions to appropriate non-destructive testing. Read the complete Gold Britannia security guide for year limits and failure interpretation.
PREMIUM AND BUYBACK
A low purchase premium can lose to a weak exit route
Compare like with like: same year category, finish, quantity, payment method and observation time. A random-year pre-owned Britannia is not the same merchandise as a current encapsulated issue or a proof coin. Ask whether the buyback requires original packaging, minimum quantity, inspection or delayed settlement.
A 22-carat pre-owned coin can win when it has a materially lower all-in cost and the same local bid. A current coin can win when its visible security, condition or dealer acceptance earns back the price difference. The matched round trip decides the close case.
UK TAX BOUNDARY
Use HMRC definitions, not a dealer slogan
HMRC's investment-gold guidance describes the conditions under which qualifying gold coins are VAT-exempt, including purity, legal-tender and normal selling-price tests or inclusion on the official list. HMRC's Capital Gains Manual separately states that Britannia gold coins are sterling currency for the cited CGT rule. These are different legal questions.
Do not extend the conclusion to every coin-shaped product, foreign bullion coin, medal, bar, collector set or business transaction. Verify the exact item, invoice and current official guidance. Tax residence, beneficial ownership and trading activity can matter. GoldObserve does not insert a tax rate or projected tax saving into the value worksheet.
METHOD AND LIMITS
How this page keeps specification, price and legal claims separate
- Uses the Royal Mint's 2026 product record for the current one-ounce specification.
- Uses the Royal Mint's own history and pre-2013 product records for the purity transition.
- Requests a source-labelled live price but does not call it the LBMA Gold Price or a dealer quote.
- Calculates melt value from fine gold, not denomination or rounded gross weight.
- Links tax statements to current HMRC guidance and does not estimate an owner's liability.
- Does not estimate authenticity, grade, collectible value, future price or counterparty solvency.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Gold Britannia questions
How much is a one-ounce Gold Britannia worth?
Its bullion melt value is one fine troy ounce multiplied by the same-time gold price in the selected currency. The actual purchase or resale amount can differ because of dealer premium, payment, delivery, condition, verification and the executable buyback bid.
How much gold is in a one-ounce Gold Britannia?
The 2026 one-ounce bullion coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold. Do not multiply that stated fine-gold content by the fineness again; the one-ounce figure already describes pure metal.
What is the weight of a one-ounce Gold Britannia?
The Royal Mint publishes 31.21 grams for the current one-ounce product and a diameter of 32.69 millimetres. Earlier 22-carat Britannias use a different alloy and must be checked against year-specific specifications.
Is the £100 face value the coin's gold value?
No. £100 is the legal-tender denomination. A non-circulating bullion coin is not designed to be spent at that amount, and ordinary bullion value is based primarily on contained gold and the transaction spread.
Are all Gold Britannias 24 carat?
No. The Royal Mint says the series was struck in 22-carat gold from its 1987 introduction and changed to 24-carat, 999.9-fine gold in 2013. Both standard one-ounce versions state one fine troy ounce of gold, but their gross composition differs.
What security features are on a current Gold Britannia?
Current bullion issues document a padlock-to-trident latent image, wave-like surface animation, DECUS ET TUTAMEN micro-text and tincture lines on the Union flag shield. These are screening evidence, not a complete authenticity result.
Is a Gold Britannia exempt from UK VAT and Capital Gains Tax?
Qualifying investment gold is VAT-exempt under the applicable UK rules. HMRC also states that Britannia gold coins are sterling currency for the relevant Capital Gains Tax rule. Tax depends on the exact product, transaction and taxpayer facts, so verify the current official guidance.
Does this page value proof or rare Britannias?
No. The worksheet models ordinary one-ounce bullion. Proof finish, presentation packaging, scarce dates, privy marks, errors and graded coins can have separate collector value that needs authenticated comparable sales.
