THE SHORT ANSWER
A historical gold price needs a CPI base before it can be compared with today's dollars
A nominal dollar in 1960 did not buy what a dollar buys in the latest CPI month. GoldObserve converts each World Bank monthly-average gold price into 2026-06 CPI dollars by multiplying the historical gold value by latest CPI divided by historical CPI. This answers a U.S. consumer-purchasing-power question; it is not a dealer quote, personal return or forecast.
797 exact-month matches.
BLS CPI-U, 1982-1984 = 100.
World Bank monthly average USD/oz.

FORMULA
Constant-dollar gold separates the gold move from the dollar's lost purchasing power
How much the broad U.S. consumer price level changed.
Historical monthly average stated in latest-CPI dollars.
Endpoint purchasing-power change, not nominal return minus inflation.
The conversion does not mean a historical investor received today's dollars. It puts two dates on a common price-level scale. A personal investment requires actual purchase price, quantity, cash flows, product costs, sale proceeds and tax treatment.
INTERPRETATION LIMITS
One national CPI basket is not every household's inflation
CPI-U measures average price change for urban consumers. Housing tenure, healthcare, geography, taxes and spending weights can make an individual budget move differently. A non-U.S. investor must also translate gold into the liability currency and use a relevant local price index.
The World Bank input is a monthly average. It smooths daily highs and lows and does not reproduce a benchmark fixing or executable quote. The early sample also spans a different monetary regime, so a constant-dollar chart should not be read as evidence that the market structure remained unchanged.
SOURCE, LICENSE & REVISION BOUNDARY
Both histories are local; no chart waits for an upstream request
Gold comes from the World Bank Commodity Price Data (Pink Sheet) under CC BY 4.0. CPI is the BLS CPI-U U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted, distributed as FRED series CPIAUCNS. BLS publications are U.S. public-domain material with attribution.
GoldObserve stores 797 CPI observations and 797 exact-month gold/CPI matches locally. The CPI file was retrieved 2026-08-01 with SHA-256 3d61f656df56ff3b738a066ce87fb086945bd7d19f6fedd2c0d16e352273440d. The updater compares the current official-distributor series with the baseline and writes only additions, revisions or removals. Page requests do not fetch FRED or BLS.
October 2025 CPI-U is missing because of the federal funding lapse; GoldObserve does not interpolate it. See the BLS missing-period explanation. As BLS requires for derived work: “BLS.gov cannot vouch for the data or analyses derived from these data after the data have been retrieved from BLS.gov.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions about real gold history
What does inflation-adjusted gold price mean?
It restates a historical nominal gold price in the purchasing-power units of the latest matched CPI month. The formula is historical gold price multiplied by latest CPI divided by historical CPI.
Is this the price someone actually paid for gold?
No. The World Bank input is a monthly average in nominal USD per troy ounce. The constant-dollar result excludes product premium, spread, storage, tax, financing and timing within the month.
Why use CPI-U not core CPI?
The page asks about broad U.S. consumer purchasing power, so it uses all-items CPI-U. Core CPI excludes food and energy and answers a different analytical question.
Are the latest dollars fixed forever?
No. When BLS publishes another CPI observation, every constant-dollar value changes because the conversion base changes. The source retrieval date and latest matched month are therefore part of the result.
Is October 2025 estimated?
No. BLS did not publish this CPI-U value after the 2025 funding lapse. GoldObserve leaves the month missing rather than inserting a made-up or interpolated observation.
