Gold Price in Switzerland Today

Follow a source-labelled Swiss-franc gold reference, compare ounce, gram and kilogram values, then test investment-gold evidence, VAT, premium, custody and exit cost.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with CHF metal value, then test the exact form, marks and exit quote

Swiss gold value begins with the international fine-gold price translated into Swiss francs. Divide the troy-ounce reference by 31.1034768 for a fine gram, then apply the product's documented purity. A real purchase adds premium and execution costs. Swiss VAT treatment depends on the exact gold form and evidence: 999.9 fineness alone does not establish Article 44 eligibility.

LIVE SWISS GOLD WORKBENCH

Price the metal, Article 44 evidence, VAT scenario and exit separately

Use the live CHF observation or enter a transparent scenario. Select a product form, record weight and purity, then check the evidence relevant to that form. The ledger keeps premium, VAT, payment, delivery, storage and buyback outside the metal reference so a cheap-looking quote cannot hide its round-trip cost.

CHF PRICE FORMATION

Swiss gold can rise while dollar gold is flat

TRANSLATION MODELUSD gold per ounce × CHF per USD = CHF gold per ounce

The metal and currency legs compound; neither is a product premium.

A weaker franc raises the CHF reference when dollar gold is unchanged. A stronger franc can offset part of a dollar-gold gain. Because the percentage moves multiply, simply adding them is only an approximation. Dealer inventory, refining, fabrication and custody costs enter after this currency translation.

These inputs are editable scenarios, not forecasts or historical observations. GoldObserve does not apply today's USD/CHF rate backwards to manufacture CHF history. A historical series requires gold and FX observations matched by date under documented reuse rights.

ARTICLE 44 DECISION MAP

“Investment gold” is not one universal purity test

STATE-MINTED COINSVerify the exact coin and customs classification

Article 44 names state-minted gold coins under specified tariff numbers; “bullion-like” is not a legal test.

CAST BAR995‰ + fineness mark + recognised assayer-melter stamp

All three entered facts must be supported by the actual product.

PRESSED BAR995‰ + fineness mark + one qualifying identity mark

The final identity leg may be a recognised assayer-melter stamp or Swiss-registered responsibility mark.

GOLD GRANULES995‰ + accredited packing and seal

Loose granules should not inherit the treatment of a documented sealed pack.

The ordinance also addresses unprocessed or semi-finished gold destined for refining or recovery, and certain clippings and scrap. Those commercial categories require facts beyond a retail calculator, so this worksheet does not invite a consumer to self-classify them.

MARKS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE

Read a Swiss gold mark by the job it performs

EvidenceWhat it communicatesWhat it does not prove alone
Fineness markDeclared precious-metal standard in thousandthsIdentity, title, dealer bid or complete VAT eligibility
Responsibility markRegistered party vouches for the article's compositionThat every bar form passes Article 44
Official hallmarkOfficial conformity control; compulsory for precious-metal watch casesMandatory official hallmarking of every ordinary bar or jewellery item
Assayer-melter stampIdentity evidence used in the investment-bar rulesCondition, serial continuity, ownership or executable value

FOCBS states that precious-metal articles marketed in Switzerland generally carry a legal fineness mark and registered responsibility mark. Official control is compulsory for precious-metal watch cases; for other precious-metal items the official control procedure is generally optional. Keep those article rules separate from the VAT treatment of investment bars.

FROM SPOT TO PHYSICAL ASK

A Swiss bar quote has at least six layers

01Metal

Fine ounces × source-labelled CHF reference.

02Fabrication

Cast, pressed, sealed and fractional products differ.

03Dealer premium

Inventory, service, hedge and margin.

04VAT

Zero in the qualifying scenario; separately modelled otherwise.

05Execution

Payment, delivery, insurance and initial storage.

The acquisition total is still only half of the decision. Request a simultaneous written buyback for the exact bar, brand, serial and packaging. Ask whether assay fees, damaged packaging, off-market refiner status, bank transfer charges or vault withdrawal can reduce the bid.

IMPORT, CUSTODY & TITLE

Crossing the border and storing in a vault are separate decisions

IMPORTDeclare the shipment

FOCBS says shipments containing precious-metal objects must be reported to a Precious Metal Control Office; a blocked selection can trigger document review.

ALLOCATEDIdentify your metal

Record bar number, refiner, weight, fineness, vault location and legal title.

UNALLOCATEDIdentify the claim

Understand whether the position is a claim on a provider rather than title to specific bars.

WITHDRAWALPrice the exit before entry

Minimums, fabrication swaps, notice periods, delivery and assay can change usable value.

BUYING CHECKLIST

Ten records to capture before paying

01Record CHF price, provider, status, observation time and weight unit.

02Identify form, gross weight, exact purity, refiner or mint and serial.

03Match the product to the correct Article 44 branch.

04Verify every required fineness, stamp, responsibility-mark or seal fact.

05Request an itemised invoice with VAT treatment and supplier identity.

06Add premium, payment, delivery, insurance and storage to acquisition.

07Obtain a same-time written buyback and list deductions.

08Confirm title, allocation, audit, insurance and sub-custodian terms.

09Check import reporting before moving metal across a border.

10Keep invoice, payment proof, serial, photographs and custody statement together.

FAQ

Swiss gold price, VAT, bars and custody questions

What is the gold price in Switzerland today?

GoldObserve displays a source-labelled Swiss-franc reference per fine troy ounce and converts that same observation to grams, 20 grams, 100 grams and kilograms. It is not a dealer's executable bid or ask.

How do I calculate the gold price per gram in CHF?

Divide CHF per fine troy ounce by 31.1034768. Multiply the fine-gram result by documented purity when the product is below pure gold, then add premium and transaction costs separately.

Is investment gold exempt from Swiss VAT?

Swiss VAT Ordinance Article 44 exempts specified gold coins and fine-gold forms with credit. Cast bars, pressed bars and granules have different fineness, marking, stamp or sealed-pack conditions; high purity alone is not enough.

What purity must a Swiss investment gold bar have?

Article 44 specifies at least 995 per mille for qualifying cast and pressed investment bars. The bar must also satisfy the form-specific fineness-mark and assayer-melter or responsibility-mark requirements.

Are gold coins VAT exempt in Switzerland?

Article 44 covers state-minted gold coins under the specified customs tariff numbers. Do not infer eligibility merely because a product is round, old, collectible or described as bullion; verify the exact coin and classification.

What is the Swiss VAT rate for a taxable gold product?

The current Swiss standard VAT rate is 8.1%. The calculator treats it as an editable scenario because the product, supply and invoice determine whether that rate applies.

Does a Swiss hallmark prove a bar is genuine or VAT exempt?

No single visual mark should replace verification. Swiss responsibility marks, fineness marks, recognised assayer-melter stamps and official hallmarks serve different purposes. Product authentication and Article 44 classification require the actual evidence.

Why does a Swiss dealer quote differ from CHF spot gold?

The physical ask can include fabrication, denomination, brand, inventory, payment, delivery, storage and dealer margin. The buyback is a separate bid and can include assay, packaging or condition deductions.
